KaiYoSyen Pedagogy

KaiYoSyen Pedagogy is Joe Moore’s original method of learning through music. It begins with sound — the way a melody moves, the rhythm of a phrase, and the silence between notes. From there, students discover how music connects to light, movement, and story.

KaiYoSyen is not just about practicing; it’s about awakening creativity. Every lesson becomes a journey of expression, imagination, and confidence. Whether a student is just starting or preparing for a performance with Moore Kauai Music, KaiYoSyen demonstrates that music is more than a skill — it’s a way of living and learning.

Philosophy of Moore Kaua‘i Music

Where Sound Becomes Self. At Moore Kaua‘i Music, we embrace the philosophy that music transcends mere notes on a page—it’s a living vibration that influences our emotions, movements, and connections. Each student who steps into our studio embarks on a personal musical journey, guided by the principles of KaiYoSyen Pedagogy, which fosters joy and discovery. Here, music lessons are not simply taught at you; they emerge from you—your body, your rhythm, your breath, your story.

Three children playing drums in a Hawaiian music class.

Rooted in the Sound of the Islands, Joe Moore brings a lifetime of experience as a pianist, composer, and educator into every music lesson. Guided by the rhythms of Kaua‘i and the pulse of each student’s natural timing, his unique approach, known as KaiYoSyen Pedagogy, brings music into the body — making it tactile, visual, emotional, and memorable.

Each lesson becomes a musical experience:

A steady heartbeat in the bass

A story rising in melody

A breath of light in the space between the notes

Whether a child is learning their first scale or an adult is returning to music after years away, we begin with one question: What is your music trying to say? Experience the magic of Moore Kauai Music and discover how the KaiYoSyen Pedagogy can transform your musical journey.

Other Leadership Roles

President of Drama Club Under the incredible Mr. Cox

Moore Kauaʻi Music is a pioneering initiative founded by a dedicated piano educator who created engaging music lessons that integrate movement, rhythm, and color. The KaiYoSyen Pedagogy serves as a public framework for creativity, connecting music, movement, story, and symbolic patterns in a cohesive manner. As the Artistic Director of the Kauaʻi Chorale, I design concerts that beautifully weave together music with storytelling and visual staging. Additionally, I have directed rehearsals for the ʻŌlelo Hawaiian Children’s Choir and crafted two bilingual Hawaiian–English productions. My passion for music education led me to establish the Vacation Music School, where I founded and led a week-long immersive music program for children. With over 40 years of stage performance experience, I have acted and sung in various productions, from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1989) to Siddhartha on Kauaʻi. Furthermore, I have served as a church musician for 60 years as a pianist, organist, and choir director. To foster community connections, I created children’s musicals, comedic skits, and community shows, including Herbert Merriweather sketches, bringing people together through laughter and storytelling.

Student Council – Southern Union State Community College – Gained early leadership experience in organizing, coordinating, and producing campus events, while fostering teamwork and communication skills essential for program leadership. Through this, I also explored the principles of KaiYoSyen Pedagogy, enhancing my understanding of effective educational practices.

National Enrollment Training & Nonprofit Workshops – Traveled nationwide as part of an enrollment team, producing and leading workshops focused on self-development, volunteer training, and community program growth, where I often integrated elements of Moore Kauai Music to engage participants.

Owner & Operator – Kauaʻi Tropical Fudge and Moore Hawaiian Trading Company (mid-2000s) – Founded and ran specialty retail businesses on Kauaʻi, combining creative product design, customer service, and tourism-based sales. Managed operations, marketing, and community outreach while building unique local brands and supporting local artists, including those offering music lessons.

Bed-and-Breakfast Owner (17 Years, Kauaʻi) – Managed all operations, reservations, marketing, and guest care, ensuring a memorable experience enriched with local culture and music.

Medical Practice Leadership (Atlanta, GA) – Served as CFO, Insurance Administrator, and Office Manager; directed nursing/midwife staffing, billing, and compliance, ensuring a smooth operation of the practice.

Community Leadership – Led the Wednesday Elders Group for three years, hosting music, crafts, and social gatherings, often featuring local talents and music lessons to enrich the community's involvement.

Fractal mirror chamber, the crystal temple from The Woodon Forest

I have always loved working with my hands, turning an idea into something you can walk into, touch, and feel. For me, building is not just about structure — it’s about creating spaces that inspire, welcome, and tell a story, much like the philosophy behind the KaiYoSyen Pedagogy, which emphasizes creativity and connection.

Construction & Carpentry (1976–78) – My foundation came from two years of trade school, where I learned the fundamentals of carpentry, measurement, and building. Those years gave me the confidence to move between technical precision and creative design, skills I later applied in my work with Moore Kauai Music, where I helped design engaging environments for music lessons.

Theatrical Set Design – I brought those skills to the stage, where I could sketch, draft, and build sets that framed entire performances. From carpentry to scenic painting, from color washes to lighting, I learned how to create an atmosphere that could transport an audience into another world, much like the immersive experience of a well-crafted music lesson.

Interior Design – My studies at the Art Institute of Atlanta gave me a professional eye for space, proportion, and color harmony. I discovered how design can change the way people feel in a room — whether intimate, playful, or grand, echoing the emotional impact of music lessons that inspire creativity.

Home Renovations – Over the years, I’ve managed and completed numerous home projects, from simple remodels to near-total rebuilds. I approach every renovation like I would a stage set: a balance of structure, beauty, and flow, designed to fit the people who will live in it, much like how we tailor music lessons to suit each student’s needs.

Whether in a concert hall, a classroom, or a home, I believe good design is about more than looks — it’s about creating an environment that supports creativity, connection, and life itself.
